Coping With Coronavirus—Calling on your strengths

“You can’t give up everything about yourself because bad things happen.”  Admittedly, I’m a Walking Dead fan.  The aforementioned line from the show’s most recent episode hits home for all of us now—even if you’re not a fan of the zombie apocalypse.

Yet, we can learn survival skills.  We can find new ways of doing things.  We can use our strengths.  We can create our own sense of normalcy.  We can make it through.

What strengths do you have that will help you persevere?  What is it about you that you could build on?  What survival skills do you already have that will serve you?

The fear of the unknown is one of the top fears we have.  This fear, or feeling of anxiety, can keep us paralyzed from engaging in positive activities.  Now might be a good time to affirm to yourself that you can build on any strength you have.

Here are a few examples to help spark your interest, and offer you inspiration to do your best to be at your best.

Do you like spending time alone?  Many of us have to do this now for our own safety.  Safety is one of our basic needs according to Dr. Abraham Maslow. If you feel more at peace alone, one of your basic human needs is already being met.  You might find yourself being more productive than usual, working or being creative from home.

Do you like to engage others?  For a good example of this, check out Laura On The Treadmill on Instagram.  She posts videos of herself dancing on a treadmill to different songs, and breaks a sweat at the same time.  She’s keeping herself moving, while being an influence for others to keep moving at home.  What could you engage in that could, in turn, motivate and help build others up?

Do you like learning new things? Do you want to redecorate, becoming your own best interior designer?  There are plenty of inspiring pictures on Pinterest--where I personally gained inspiration on how to make my bathroom look like a spa for my clients.  Another interior design inspiration you may want to follow on Instagram is At Home With Joseph. He does it all!

Maybe you desire deep clean or de-clutter your home.  Now is a great time to become the best housekeeper there ever was—and burn off some calories at the same time!  Also, becoming organized can give you a sense of control. Maybe you want to start a garden.  There surely are plenty of how to YouTube videos on any “how to” you want to get into.

Are you a knowledge seeker?  What interests you that you’ve not had the time to look into before?  Have you been thinking of having a tiny home in your backyard as an AirBnB for an extra source of income?  Maybe you’d like to learn how to flip houses.

Do you have interest in other cultures or ways of life?  There are plenty of shows online or otherwise to find something that grabs your interest—and may make you want to go be immersed in that place one day.  We have plenty of time to daydream, and think what would make us feel more fulfilled.  Do you have a Bucket List?

Are you tenacious?  No matter what you choose to get yourself into, your tenacity will, no doubt, help you accomplish it.  If you are doing well staying motivated, active, creative, or innovative, maybe you can help inspire others.  We all could use it right now.  Show us what you’re doing!

I hope these tips have proved inspiring, and maybe sparked some ideas that are your own. I really believe this time can be helpful to us, if we pay attention to the signs we see, feel, hear, smell, or taste.  We then are more likely to become more mindful in the moment.  With that mindfulness, we can be better able to shift our focus to one of productivity and positivity.

Please feel free to reach out to me here with your ideas or struggles. Please do share this with someone else you feel could benefit. If you read this through social media, please don’t hesitate to comment below.  You just might feel good getting your words out there.
